Designer Spotlight {Dara Senders}

{SS}What inspired you to start your company?

{DS} For my entire life I always wanted to either a Broadway star or fashion designer. When it was time to apply to colleges I decided to only apply to universities with business of fashion and design programs knowing I’d be able to do more with that degree. I was accepted to my dream school, The Fashion Institute of Technology in 2006 and I haven’t looked back since. Starting Dara Senders New York was a goal I always wanted to reach. I love Fashion and I love art especially art that can be worn, which is what fashion design is in a nut shell. Also, the idea of someone wearing an item I created and it letting them feel beautiful is something that has always been dear to my heart. I had a few pearls and jewelry wire left over from a class project I had been working on one semester, I decided to make a bracelet out of the materials I had left and voila, in 2009 DSNY was born. I sold primarily through word of mouth and The Style Shop (FIT’s Boutique). In 2011, I took a hiatus from furthering my brand to focus more on school and earning my degree. After graduation in 2012, I was missing designing greatly and put most of my efforts back into rebuilding my brand from the ground up in a more professional manner. My BS in Fashion Merchandising Management with a concentration in Product Development from FIT truly aided me in doing so! I have a very creative mind and great mind for business and marketing simultaneously, so combining them all together to form my own brand just made sense to me.

{SS} In regards to your personal style, do you have a signature look or accessory?

{DS} My signature look would probably be considered as classic, feminine, comfortable, and chic. one of my all time favorite ensemble that never goes out of style is a great pair of slacks (may it be a fitted pant or jean) paired with a turtle neck, a crisply fitted T-shirt, or an oxford a long with with a fitted tailored jacket with lots of popping accessories preferably by Dara Senders!
